Day 1-Winter Learning Journey

Day 1: 100% PURE New Zealand

Well, the time has now come! School’s out for the holidays and your tour of New Zealand is about to begin. I hope that you are ready and excited! Curious Kiwi certainly is – he can’t wait to start the Great Kiwi Road Trip! Before you all hit the road, let’s take a minute to review some key facts about New Zealand.3.jpg

Activity 1:  Go to the Tourism New Zealand website and click on the ‘Facts - New Zealand People’ tab. Read about the people of New Zealand and then choose three interesting facts to post on your blog. The facts must be written in your own words. Do not simply copy and paste the facts from the website☺.
Facts
  1.  There are approximately 4.4 million people living in New Zealand. 69% off the people here are European, 14.6 are indigenous maori, 9.2% are Asian and 6.9% are pacific islanders.
  2.  New Zealand citizens are formally known as “kiwis”.
  3. In New Zealand, it’s customary for Maori people to greet each other using a hongi. Which is when two people press foreheads and noses against each other.
  4. New Zealander Aj Hackett invented “bungee jump”, which is a type of activity where one jumps off a bridge, cliff with a bunjee tied onto their foot and waist.
  5. New Zealand’s national sport is Rugby with the All blacks, the greatest international rugby team, representing NZ proudly.
  6. Some ways through New Zealanders hearts are farming. We love to farm for it’s our way of life/

Activity 2: Your tour of New Zealand is going to start right here in Auckland. Watch the Tourist video for Auckland to learn about the awesome things that you can see and do in the city. Once you’ve finished, choose your favourite five activities from the video and list them on your blog.
List of 5 activities
  1. Elliott Stables
  2. Auckland Museum
  3. Kelly Tarltons
  4. Mission Bay
  5. Sky Tower

Bonus Activity: Now it’s time to start your tour! Curious Kiwi decides to start by taking you on a short tour through downtown Auckland. You stop at the Sky Tower, the tallest building in all of New Zealand. When you look up, you see a huge New Zealand flag on the top of the tower. This flag was created back in 1902. That makes the New Zealand flag 115 years old!

Last year, the Prime Minister of New Zealand suggested that we should replace the flag with a new, updated design. He invited everyone in New Zealand to come up with their own flag design and submit it.
For this activity, it is your turn to design a new flag. Use any drawing programme that you wish.  Once you have finished, post a copy of your design on your blog. Describe the flag, in words, below the picture. Be sure to tell us what is on the flag and what inspired your design.

My flag incorporates the 4 stars from the original flag, same colour, white on the inside and red outline. I added a black fern that represents one of our native plants. The colours I incorporated, I also used from the original flag. The word “Kiwis”, represent our nickname as New Zealanders.
Bonus Activity = 8 points

Kia ora from Kerikeri Luisa. Great start to your Winter Learning Journey. The facts you have included are all interesting. I am sure we in Auckland know what it feels like to live in a country with many, many people as we are the most populated city. I do have to agree with our country's love of farming. I went to a farmers market this morning in Kerikeri and how lovely it is to eat fresh and organic produce. I had some lemonade, tasted some lovely beef cooked American style though. I look forward to reading more of your work during the break. Do not forget your reading log :). Ka kite - Mrs Tofa.

Hi Cherise and Aaliyahna!. It's great to hear from you guys!. Thank you Cherise, simplicity is the key for me!. Out of the five activities I would pick the sky tower. Believe it or not, i've never been in the building before. Thank you both for viewing and commenting on my blog.

Kia ora Luisa and welcome back to the Winter Learning Journey blogging programme! We are SOO happy to have you back blogging with us again this holiday.

I have really enjoyed reading through your posts and through the thoughtful comments posted by Cherise, Aaliyahna and Mrs Tofa.

It is wonderful to see that you are sharing your learning with each other and supporting one another by asking questions and providing feedback. I hope that you are able to get to the Sky Tower one day, Luisa, as it is pretty cool. I must admit that I'm a bit afraid of heights, however, so I find it pretty tricky to go to the Sky Tower and look down from the top. I did it once with Aronui when we went to the Sky Tower for Mother's Day. We had high tea at a restaurant that is at Level 52 of the Sky Tower. It is called 'Orbit' and it rotates around in a circle so that you can sit at your table and, over the course of your meal, see the entire city of Auckland spreading out below you...

I really hope that you will continue with your blogging over the next two weeks, Luisa. It is such a pleasure to blog with you! I can't wait to see what you write next...

Cheers,
Rachel :)

Kia ora Rachel!.

Like always, I love reading your comments on my blogs, giving me feedback and compliments on my work. I do hope that one day I will get the opportunity to visit the sky tower, but maybe just go on the lower levels haha:). Thank you for sharing your knowledge on this amazing landmark and for your feedback.
