Day 14 – Powerful People

You are now fully recharged having spent the last few days watching TV and listening to music in your hotel room. You decide to go for a walk. As soon as you step outside you see a big bus drive past. On the side of the bus is a huge picture of the leader, the president/prime minister, of the country. They are the most powerful person in the whole country.

Prime Minister of Canada	Mr. Justin Pierre James Trudeau	Justin Trudeau is the current Prime Minister of Canada. He became prime minister on 4 November 2015.  His dad, Pierre, was the prime minister of Canada in the 1970s. Before Justin became the prime minister he worked as a teacher.
President of Chile	Ms. (Veronica) Michelle Bachelet	The current President of the Republic of Chile is Michelle Bachelet. She was first became president in 2006 and is the first woman in the history of Chile to be the president. She speaks five languages - Spanish, English, German, Portuguese and French.
President of Chile	Mr. Joachim Gauck	The current president of Germany is Mr. Joachim Gauck. He became president in March 2012. Before he became the president, he was a minister. He is married and has four children – Christian, Martin, Gesine and Katharina.
Malaysian Prime Minister	Mr. Dato' Sri Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak	The current Prime Minister of Malaysia is Mr. Najib Razak. He is the 6th prime minister of the country. He became the prime minister in April 2009. He is married to his wife, Rosmah, and together they have five children.
Prime Minister of the United Kingdom	Mrs. Theresa Mary May	Mrs. May became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on 13 July 2016. She is the leader of the conservative party and only the second woman to ever become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Mrs. May has been married to her husband, Philip, for 36 years. They do not have any children.
President of the United Mexican States (Mexico)	Mr. Enrique Pena Nieto	Mr. Nieto is the 57th President of Mexico. He was elected on 1 July 2012 and took office on 1 December 2012. He was originally educated as a lawyer and had been the governor of Mexico prior to becoming president. Mr. Pena Nieto is currently married to a soap opera actress, Angelica Rivera. He has four children.
President of the Republic of South Africa	Mr. Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma	Mr. Zuma was elected as president in 2009 and re-elected in 2014. He is also the President of the African National Congress (ANC). Mr. Zuma is currently married to four women and has approximately 20 children.
President of the United Arab Emirates	Mr. Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan	Mr. (Sheikh) Khalifa became the president on 3 November 2004 after his father, the former president, passed away. He is the head of the government, the army and the supreme council for the UAE. His family is worth approximately $150 billion dollars. Sheikh Khalifa is married to Shamsa bint Suhail Al Mazrouri. He has no children.
Prime Minister of Japan	Mr. Shinzo Abe	Mr. Abe is the prime minister and the president of the Liberal Democratic Party in Japan. He was first elected as prime minister in 2006 but had to resign in 2007 for health reasons. He recovered and was re-elected as prime minister in 2012. He and his wife, Akie Matsuzaki, have no children.
Prime Minister of Australia	Mr. Malcolm Turnbull	Mr. Turnbull became the prime minister on 15 September 2015. He was not elected by the people of Australia but, instead, by members of his own party, the Liberal Party. They had a special vote because they were not happy with the work that the current prime minister, Tony Abbott, was doing. Mr. Turnbull was then elected by the people of Australia in the 2016 election. He is married to his wife Lucy and they have two children.

Activity 1

Here in New Zealand, the prime minister of the country is the Honourable John Key. Imagine that you are Mr. Key and you have the power to create laws (rules) that all people in New Zealand would have to follow. If I (Rachel) were the prime minister I would make a rule that everyone should eat lollies for breakfast. What three (3) rules would you make up if you were the prime minister? On your blog tell us what your three rules would be.

Rule No.1- Everyone lives in a house, with or without money

Rule No.2- Every Saturday is Pizza Saturday.

Rule No.3- Every child has limited time on devices

Activity 2

Some people say that the most powerful person in the world is the president of the United States. His name is Donald Trump and he became the president this past November when he beat out his competitor, a woman named Hillary Clinton. Google ‘Hillary Clinton’ to find out a little bit more about her. On your blog, post three interesting facts about Hillary.

No.1 -Hillary Clinton has two brothers, Hugh (1950) and Anthony (1957).

No.2-When she was a teenager, Hillary Clinton organized a baby-sitting group to look after the children of migrant Mexican workers in rural Illinois.

No.3-Hillary Clinton, who is a Methodist, and Bill Clinton, who is a Southern Baptist, were married in a Methodist ceremony in their living room on October 11, 1975.

Bonus Activity

Being the prime minister of a country is a big responsibility. Would you like to be the prime minister of New Zealand one day? On your blog tell us what you think. Would you like to be the prime minister?  Why or why not?

I wouldn’t want to be the prime minister of New Zealand. There would be too much work to do such as meeting up with other prime ministers(Presidents, monarchs), paperwork, political meetings. I guess you got the idea. I’m all for the being in charge, rulemaking, looking after the country part. But being prime minister requires a lot of commitment. Who knows? I might have a change of mind.

Day 13 – La, La, La...

Although you had a very restful day yesterday watching TV you have woken up feeling quite tired. You decide to turn on the radio and listen to some music before you get up and get on with your day. When you turn on the radio, the first song that you hear is one by Justin Bieber, a musician from Canada.

Activity 1

Justin Bieber is arguably one of the most famous musicians in the world right now. He has had (#) of Number 1 hits, including the songs:

Watch the three videos. After you have finished watching them, rank them from #1 (best) to #3 (worst). On your blog, list the three videos in order from best to work and tell us why you have ranked them in that order.

The song is upbeat but no really my type of vibe. Though the NZ dance group Royal Family dances in the video.

I don’t really enjoy listening to this song anymore because the song is just old news.. Have you ever gotten annoyed continuously listening to a song and then afterwards you just despite it?. That how i’m feeling, no offense.

Every year there is a huge music festival held in New Plymouth, New Zealand. It is called WOMAD. WOMAD stands for ‘World of Music, Arts and Dance.’ The festival began in 1980 and there are WOMAD festivals held every year in Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Spain, Italy and The United Arab Emirates. They attract singers and performers from all around the world. Imagine that you are on the WOMAD organising committee for next year. Which two musicians/bands would you invite to perform? On your blog tell us the names of the two musicians/bands and tell us a bit about them. Where are they from? What kind of music do they play?

Three Houses Down

Because there latest hit (Love and Affection) will also be a great hit when sung at WOMAD. They are a reggae group which would add a whole new vibe to the concert. They are from Otara Auckland, NZ. Three houses down are all about the music and fans.

My second option would have to be a band out of NZ obviously to add a more spectacular vibe. I would say a band from Australia maybe, or England, Africa.

Bonus Activity

There are literally dozens of different types (‘genres’) of music in the world, including classical, rock ‘n roll, Rhythm & Blues (R&B), pop, hip hop, rap, jazz, etc. Some musicians play on their own and some play as part of a band. Arguably, the most influential band of all time is The Beatles. They were a rock band from Liverpool, England.

Dozens of movies have been made about the band. The most recent was a documentary called ‘The Beatles: 8 Days a Week – The Touring Years.’ Watch the trailer for this movie.

After you have finished, tell us two things that you learned about the Beatles from watching this trailer. They can be any two interesting facts!

• Like Paul Mccartney said, The Beatles were like a unit, they took care of each other and it had became brotherhood!
• Also that the Beatles were very popular, and then later in their careers hate washed among them. Albums and photos of them were being burnt or destroyed.

Day 12 – As Seen on T.V...

Today you wake up and you are feeling quote tired after all of your sightseeing so you decide to spend the day relaxing in front of the TV. When you turn on the TV you decide to scroll through the channels to see what local television programmes and movies are like in your country. You are amazed! 2. What you liked about the show

I liked how the show was based on star wars and had light sabers and space ships.

3. What you didn’t like about the show

I disliked how the clips were badly edited, during the video it stuttered and replayed some bits. And also because it was another language so I obviously couldn’t understand. (*)

Activity 2

Most of us like to watch TV when we have the chance. One of my favourite television shows, at the moment, is called Veep. It’s a show about a woman who becomes the President of the United States. It’s pretty funny! I watch Veep on HBO every Monday night.

What is your favourite television show at the moment? On your blog, tell us the name of your favourite television show and tell us, briefly, what it is about.

My favourite television show at the moment is Flash. Flash is about a boy named Barry Allen whose life was changed when a particle accelerator exploded killing some people but also gifting some. Barry Allen was struck by the particle accelerator and was given the powers of lightning speed, literally. Barry teams up with the man who made the particle accelerator and his employees. Together they fight the evil villains who we were also affected by the explosion and given powers.

In this video Jono and Ben interview a guyw ho became the internet for speaking the words “It Richie mcawwee--aye, that’s the one aye”, when he saw Richie Mccaw.  The interview is set in a dairy and famous New Zealanders walk into the dairy. What the guy is supposed to do is speak the lines one more but using the celebrity's name instead.

Activity 1

Take a picture of yourself participating in a popular New Zealand sport. On your blog tell us the name of the sport and why you have chosen it.

This photo is from last year, with room 7 of me and other students playing snag golf. I chose this sport because I thought that snag golf is nearly identical to actual golf.

Activity 2

Write a short paragraph describing your sporting hero. Who is he/she? Why are they your favourite sportsman?

My favourite sportsman is the one and only, NBA player, Stephen Curry. He’s my favourite sportsman because he’s very inspiring. Though he is not as tall as the other basketball players, he proves in every game that size is just a number. Short or tall it doesn’t matter. It’s the stamina, courage and agility you have when you play the sport. He’s a very exquisite basket player and one of the most famous.

Bonus Activity

According to the Love New Zealand website, the most popular sports in New Zealand are rugby union, rugby league, netball, soccer and cricket. In your opinion, which of these sports is the best one? On your blog tell us which sport you think is the best. Be sure to tell us why. Give us as many reasons as you can!

I would say Rugby union. Rugby union is a well known sport in NZ and if you don’t know, our New Zealand rugby union team is the best in the world. A majority of the children and adults in NZ play rugby. Our NZ haka is now famous around the world too. American sport teams imitating our haka in a good way I guess. Also because watching rugby is very interesting, the competitive vibe travels through the room, causing shouts and cheering towards the t.v.
