Niva Retimanu: duffy role model assembly

On Mondy, Aaliyahna, Loto and I, were chosen representatives to introduce and thank our duffy role model at assembly, Niva Retimanu.

Niva is a samoan born radio host, raised in Invarg Cill. She is a award winning journalist and news reader for the number one station in New Zealand, Newstalk ZB. She has also worked at various other radio stations around New Zealand.

We led Niva into the hall, where Aaliyahna and Loto introduced Niva to the whole school, they talked about her career. As soon as they finished introducing Niva, I requested for her to address our assembly. Niva stood in front of the whole school and expanded on what Aaliyahna and Loto had said. During her speech, she decided to read us a book called, Kiss Kiss Yuck Yuck. To conclude her speech, Niva taught us a moto about reading. The Motto was “It’s good to read, it’s god to achieve”.

Before Niva left, she handed out the duffy books to the chosen top students from each class. Afterwards, the whole school sang the duffy song. In my opinion, I think we did an awesome job singing it, we were loud and sang proudly.

To conclude the assembly, I stood in front of the whole school and thanked Niva for taking her time out to come to our school to talk to us about her career and for teaching us the importance of reading. It was an honour to have met one of my Pacifica and New Zealand role models and to have thanked her. What an assembly!.

Queen Victoria Speech

Next week our class is hosting and presenting in our school assembly. We figured (Mrs. Tofa figured) that we do an assembly item on Waitangi Day. We had to choose someone who signed the treaty or was involved in making it, and write a speech about the treaty. We had to write from the perspectives of the people we chose, and then say the speech as if we were them (the character, not exactly character). I chose Queen Victoria, one of the longest reigning monarchs that has ever ruled England.

Facts on Queen Victoria
Queen Victoria was Queen of the United kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Queen Victoria was married to Prince Albert Consort(Fact: Apparently Prince Albert is her cousin!), who died on  the 14th of December, 1841( by a fever and died at 42 years old). As for Queen Victoria, she died from Intracerebral hemorrhage, (A type of stroke). She died. on the 22nd of January 1901. Victoria had 9 children, she had 5 daughters and 4 sons.

Victoria sent James Busby as a representative on her behalf to create the treaty and to convince the Maori to sign. She also sent a few other Europeans too. Some Maori chiefs had to protect the Queen back then which was part of an agreement in the treaty.

My speech as Queen Victoria
“Victoria is my name, Queen Victoria to be exact.  I am the Empress of India, Queen of England and the Queen of Ireland also. As the  queen of England I am  prepared to take on any country I come face to face, allies or non allies. As one of the most longest reigning monarchs who has ever ruled England, I need to make the days of being a Queen count. Speaking of rules, New Zealand(Odd name, soon to be New England) needs a couple of them. What a great opportunity to rule another country, and help of course, they seem reasonable. Creating a treaty is a great way to settle things between our countries, though we need the Maoris, is that correct term, Maoris?, to sign the treaty before the French get to them first. I put my trust in William to accomplish this for me, as well as James too. From what I've heard, Maori warriors are very fierce men and women. I could use some more protection up in the Palace, perhaps I could add that to the treaty, but that is to be determined later.”

Leader ship

This morning and 2 weeks ago on Friday the leader ship badges were handed out. Yes, I also received a badge, not one but two and one more remaining.

The two badges I had received was Media team monitor and House Vice Captain. I was very proud of my self for working very hard to be selected and given the opportunity to wear the badge. There were other leader ship roles that I thought deserved the badges like Peer Mediators, Sport Shed, Enviro Team and Librarians.

Our Duffy Role Model

Today, we had a Duffy role model assembly. Our Duffy role model was Myron Simpson, Junior Olympic champion who came second in the ominions and was placed fourth in the commonwealth games. Myron Simpson explained how he traveled to 25 countries through out his 25 years of cycling. He started cycling since he was 3 years old and he is very passionate about the food he eats and cooks.Myron showed us his different gear that he uses when he is cycling. He had his helmet which was air brushed with the NZ symbols and the silver fern. He had his cycling shoes with cleats on the bottom so that his shoes attach onto the pedal of his bike. Then Myron showed his silver medal that he won in Mexico. He also showed us his bike which is 7 kilograms and has very thin wheels. Lastly he showed us his skin suit. His skin suit looked small but he explained that the fabric used to make the skin suit was very thin and stretchy .All of Myron's gears are designed to be aerodynamic which means his gear was designed make him go faster. He also explained that before he traveled to different countries he would first read about the country and food they eat before traveling there. Myron also owns his own muesli factory and makes his own muesli called Myron's Muesli. Last of all, Myron asked us questions which we answered. The students that he chose to answer his questions got to come up next to him and had a special opportunity to wear his gear. Danny wore his silver medal, Honey wore his helmet, Mateaki wore his special shoes and Siueli wore his skin suit and got to ride his bike. I really enjoyed getting to meet such a wonderful athlete.
