Thomas Peaceful-Anzac Poem

Thomas Peaceful is a fictional character from my favourite book, Private Peaceful. The book is all about Thomas Peaceful's life, from his first day at school and to his battles at France. My poem is about the Sacrifice his dad made for him and Penance.

From the perspective of Tommo Peaceful

Sacrifice
It demands the surrender of things
We cherish above all else

Along with sacrifice comes
Penance
The more grievous the sin
The more self inflicted suffering
My sin?
My greatest fall!
The day I had killed father
Twas not my intention
Nor was it the tree’s
The tree that had ended the life of father
The tree that had cut short
Father’s lifelong film
My penance, I was going to live knowing what
I had faulted against father
The greatest suffering above all

When the tree was falling
It had seemed as if it was still upright
Father yelled from a distance
His voice shot like a bullet through my ears
and echoed continuously on my thoughts
I was in a deep trance
So deep, that when I had realized
that the tree was falling
Not a muscle nor a hair on my body
moved

At that moment, father had swooped me in arms
Lifted me gracefully with ease
Ran a few meters, before thrusting me across
And there I lied, at the tip of the oak tree
Facing dear father
Hands, were spread out wide
Body, didn't make a single movement
head was flopped, looking at me
With a red velvet substance of liquid
dripping from his nose

I remember
Seeing his pain lift from his face, and enter mine
I remember
not coping with his death
I remember
the trauma I had put my family through
I remember
how everything was before he had died

Day 5 – Boarding the Plane
It’s the big day! You’re about to hop on an airplane and travel to a new country. Curious Kiwi will keep you company on the journey. Unfortunately, Curious Kiwi forgot his book and he is worried that he’ll get bored on the long flight without anything to read. He asks you for some help…

Activity 1
Think about all of the books that you have read this year and recommend one for Curious Kiwi to read. On your blog list the title and author of the book and then provide a short description of it. What is the book about?
Book: Private Peaceful
Author: Michael Morpurgo
The blurb of the book-
“As young Thomas Peaceful looks back over his childhood from the battlefields of the First World War, his memories are full of family deep in the countryside.
But the clock is ticking, and every moment Tommo spends remembering how things used to be, means another moment closer to something which will change his life forever”
As I read the book through the year, I became more curious of what will happen next in the story, chapter after chapter. I recommend that you should read this book, because it has everything you would want in a book, Action, drama, romance and the urge to find out more.

Book 1: Catching Fire (The Hunger Games #2) by Suzanne Collins
Against all odds, Katniss has won the Hunger Games. She and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark are miraculously still alive. Katniss should be relieved, happy even. After all, she has returned to her family and her longtime friend, Gale. Yet nothing is the way Katniss wishes it to be. Gale holds her at an icy distance. Peeta has turned his back on her completely. And there are whispers of a rebellion against the Capitol - a rebellion that Katniss and Peeta may have helped create. Much to her shock, Katniss has fueled an unrest she's afraid she cannot stop. And what scares her even more is that she's not entirely convinced she should try. As time draws near for Katniss and Peeta to visit the districts on the Capitol's cruel Victory Tour, the stakes are higher than ever. If they can't prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that they are lost in their love for each other, the consequences will be horrifying.
Book 2: Matilda by Roald DahlC:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\Matilda book cover.jpg
Matilda is a sweet, exceptional young girl, but her parents think she's just a nuisance. She expects school to be different but there she has to face Miss Trunchbull, a kid-hating terror of a headmistress. When Matilda is attacked by the Trunchbull she suddenly discovers she has a remarkable power with which to fight back. It'll take a superhuman genius to give Miss Trunchbull what she deserves and Matilda may be just the one to do it!
Book 3: Diary of a Wimpy Kid – The Ugly TruthC:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\DoaWK image.jpg
Greg Heffley has always been in a hurry to grow up. But is getting older really all it’s cracked up to be? Greg suddenly finds himself dealing with the pressures of boy-girl parties, increased responsibilities, and even the awkward changes that come with getting older—all without his best friend, Rowley, at his side. Can Greg make it through on his own? Or will he have to face the “ugly truth.”
Hunger Games Catching Fire
I choose this book because I have seen the movies and I know I wouldn’t be disappointed. Like most people say the books are always greater than the movies, so what a great way to test the theory. There are dramatic scenes as well as action and romance. Also because I love the bold, confident and brave character who’s name is Katniss Everdeen. Speaking of the book, I have a copy of the book.
Bonus Activity
It’s time to use your imagination to write a short story. I’ve provided you with three different beginnings for a story. Choose your favourite beginning and finish the story. What happens next? You can use your imagination and create any ending that you want. To earn full points, you must post, at least 8-10 sentences, on your blog.

  1. I looked around the room. Nothing seemed unusual, but then…

  1. I knew it was going to be an unusual day when my mom came into my bedroom and said...

  1. The spaceship was out of control and only one person could save us....
I looked around the room. Nothing seemed unusual, but then dark shadows appeared out of nowhere in various areas in the rooms. Suddenly the shadows started to move rapidly I couldn’t see anything. Everything stopped suddenly, Stiles was sitting in front of me with his hands on his head, shaking continuously, staring at the ground. So was I. “Stiles, how do you if you are in a dream or not?”. Stiles took his attention off the ground and his eyes shot at me sinisterly. “If you have more than 5 fingers on each hand” he answered. I slowly lifted my hands shaking, I screamed at the horrific sight. I had 6 fingers. I had the sudden urge to run but a familiar voice controlled my movement. The voice echoed through my mind and I fell into a deep trance. I woke up in my bed to my mum on my bedside yelling my name. I thought to myself, “It was just a dream”.

Chapte Four-Private Peaceful💐

Chapter Four: Ten To Midnight
In this chapter the boys had realized that the stones Molly told their futures with was very correct. But unfortunately whenever they weren't with Molly, they were not so lucky. They had gone poaching for the first time without Molly and disaster struck. Tommo fell asleep as he was on the lookout, but usually the presence of Molly kept him awake. They were caught by the Colonel's lookout, Lambert. They were taken to Big house to the Colonel and were given a punishment. They also had to apologize to the Colonel for trespassing and as their punishment, they had to clean the colonel's dog kettles every Sunday till Christmas. Molly got better by then and continued going school. As Tommo turned 12, Molly and Charlie moved out of school to work at the big house and Tommo found that he hardly got to see any of them. He began to feel left out and the stories he told them didn't interest them. One day a plane landed near Charlie and Tommo and the pilot asked them for some directions. Later he had offered them some humbugs. His hum bugs are confiscated at school by Mr. Munnings and was given 6 whacks on his hand with a ruler. Charlie came home and told Tommo he had stolen Bertha because the Colonel was going to shoot her because she was too old so Charlie told her and hid her in his father's old shack.

Chapter Three summary-Private Peaceful🌺

Chapter Three: Nearly Quarter Past Eleven
In chapter three, Big Joe's love for mice grew but unfortunately for him, Grandma wolf hated mice and hunted for them with her every might. Tommo remembered how Big Joe held the biggest funeral that a mouse could ever have. On Big Joe's Birthday Molly got him a field mouse which he adored so much but he had to hide it from Grandma Wolf. Somehow Grandma Wolf found out about the mice and killed it, along with his other animals: his hedge hog, slow worms and others. Molly, Charlie and Tommo start to poach illegally on the Colonels land, catching rabbit, salmon and deer's if they were lucky enough. All three of them go skinny dipping in his lake. Molly tells their future using stones and the stones said "As long as they were together, they will always have good luck". As the near end of the chapter, Tommo and Charlie find out that Molly has Scarlet Fever and was not authorized to Molly nor was Molly to to see them.

Chapter two summary-Private Peaceful🌼

Chapter Two: Twenty To Eleven
In chapter two, Tommo remembers his memories with his brother Joe or Big Joe who is disabled. He remembered the time where Charlie and Tommo had fed Big Joe rabbit droppings and as a consequence of doing so their mother had made each of them eat one each. Also the moment when a bully was mean to Tommo because of Big Joe's Disability, which caused a fight between the two. The bully was bigger than Tommo, so he was beaten up. Charlie stepped in and took one for the team, ending up with a punishment of 5 strokes(Hits). That was also the day where Charlie and Tommo had became best friends with Molly, when she was instructed to clean up Tommo. One day the Colonel (Who is sort of the mayor) arrived at the Peaceful's to kick them out because no one in the family is working. In order to save their cottage, Mrs.peaceful had to work at the Big house(The Colonels house) as the wife's maid for she was sick. Grandma wolf, their great aunt, has to move in to look after the children. Grandma wolf, bosses Mrs. Peaceful around as well as the kids, and doubts Mrs. Peaceful's parenting.

In this chapter we meet Grandma Wolf, Colonel and get to know more about Molly, Charlie, Big Joe and Tommo
