Summer Learning Journey-Day 2-Week 1

Day 2 – Learning the basics
Now that you have chosen your country, it is time to decide where, within your country, you would like to visit. Many tourists will choose to visit the capital city of a country. It is often quite large and full of interesting things to see and do.
Activity 1
Before you go overseas it will be important that you learn a bit about the capital city of your country. Hop online and find out about the capital city of your country. Use this information to complete the five sentences below:
  1. The name of the capital city is Berlin
  2. The population of the capital city for 2016 has not been determined. The estimated population for 2014 was 3.4 million. In 2015 the population was approximately 3.6 million.
  3. In January, the weather in the capital city is usually rainy and snowy.
  4. The capital city is located in the northern, eastern (northern, southern, middle) part of the country.
  5. The languages most commonly spoken in the capital city are Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Polish, Kurdish, Vietnamese, English, Serbian, Croatian, Greek, and other Asian languages.
Activity 2
One of the most popular activities in Madrid, the capital city of Spain, is called ‘Bullfighting.’ It has been a part of Spanish culture for centuries. In bullfighting people called ‘toreros and ‘matadors’ fight with a live bull. The toreros do most of the fighting and, ultimately, capture the bull and tie it up. Once it has been caught, the matador joins the fight and kills the bull. Although most toreros and matadors are men, there are some women who also compete in the sport.
Not everyone supports bullfighting in Spain. In fact, about 30% of the population want it to be banned (stopped) completely. What do you think? On your blog tell us whether or not you think that bullfighting should be banned in Spain. Please provide, at least, two reasons to support your decision.

  1. I believe that bullfighting should be stopped because it could lead to severe injuries to the matadors or anyone who comes face to face with the bulls. Injuries such as death(not exactly an injury) or concussions, cuts from the horns of a bull and injuries from being stepped on by the bull.
  2. Also because killing bulls aren’t really necessary. It’s hard to believe that people pay to watch people violently kill a bull slowly just for satisfaction.

Bonus activity
Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand. Have you been to Wellington? If so, please tell us about two things that you did when you were in Wellington.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to go to Wellington, follow the link to learn more about this very cool city: Discover Wellington.
On your blog, tell us what two things you would like to do if you had the chance to visit Wellington. Would you go to the botanical gardens or visit the Beehive? Perhaps you would prefer to go shopping on Cuba Street or go out for dinner on Quay Street…

If I were to visit Wellington, I would definitely go out for dinner on Quay street with a couple of friends and family. On the last day of my visit I would go to their Space Place Planetarium in Kelstrom to learn more about our earth as well as our solar system. If I have enough time, I would visit their botanical gardens and enjoy my last moments in Wellington.

Hi Luisa, Wellington is a beautiful city. I have visited Wellington several times and one trip was with 60+ students. It was great to take the students inside the Beehive and Parliament house and see where decisions are debated about our country. The other must see attraction in Wellington is Te Papa Museum which is the biggest museum in New Zealand. Its several storeys high and a magnificent place of learning. It also has a very good cafe on the bottom floor which is another plus :). Flights to Wellington are not that expensive and at times when Grabaseat have sale they can be as low as $19. Keep up the good work dear.

Hi again Luisa, I agree with your stance on bullfighting. It should be banned because of the cruelty to bulls and also the many injuries and sometimes death caused by this sport. Although it is a sport which has been around for many years changes need to be put in to stop this sport.

I totally agree with your statement. It's very nice to hear from someone who has actually been To Wellington. I bet you it is as wonderful as you described it. Thank you Mrs. Tofa.

Kia ora Louisa!

This was really good reading. I agree that killing the bull so violently is an outdated sport. But again, what can we do except complain? I think over time the Spanish people will come to that realization themselves.

I used to live in Wellington and I have done almost all of the things you want to do! I haven't been to the planetarium, but if I was teaching down there I am sure it would be a school trip!

I really want to visit Weta Workshop. I tell everyone that. It looks really cool. How about you? Are you interested in film?

Keep up the great work!

Mark
